Giving - Academic Posts
Oxford’s world-renowned community of scholars offers unmatched expertise and inspiration in its teaching and research of Archaeology. The funding of posts at all levels – from junior research fellowships to the most prominent named Chairs – is vitally important to maintaining and enhancing the quality of Oxford’s academic community. Supporting the full range of academic positions provides an enduring career ladder for young academics, allowing the School to recruit, retain and cultivate the best teachers and researchers at every stage of their academic development.
For example, the School’s Centre for Maritime Archaeology, a relatively new Centre, is already at the forefront of the quest to understand the experience of people who lived on and around the sea. However, as the Centre’s staff are employed on externally funded and fixed-term contracts, the most effective way to ensure the continued future of maritime archaeology at Oxford is through the endowment of professorships and/or lectureships. A Professorship in Maritime Archaeology would provide academic leadership within the School, attract funding for research within the field and continue to attract the brightest researchers from around the world to join the thriving graduate community which already exists at the School.
