The Oxford Centre for Asian Archaeology, Art and Culture offers graduate student teaching and training across a range of topics relating to Asian heritage and culture. UK and international students are welcome to apply to undertake MSt, MPhil, or DPhil studies in the Oxford School of Archaeology on Asia-related topics. The Centre offers diverse expertise on Asia, and fosters a rich learning and networking environment in which students have the opportunity to participate in Asia-related seminars and events, and meet other students and researchers studying the Asian world.
Students benefit equally from the rich scholarly resources of the University of Oxford, including outstanding library resources, museums and research facilities. The Bodleian, Sackler, Oriental Institute, Institute for Chinese Studies, and India Institute Libraries all offer superb collections of relevance to research on Asia. The Centre has strong links to both the Ashmolean Museum and the Pit-Rivers Museum, and staff have important research connections to the Faculty of Oriental Studies and individual area studies institutes.
The School of Archaeology now offers a Taught Masters Programme in Archaeology (MSt/MPhil). The MSt is a one-year taught course consisting of a broad range of options, including subjects in Asian archaeology and heritage. Topics assessed by examination and essay include the Archaeology of Asia, Chinese Archaeology, and Palaeolithic Asia. The MPhil is a two-year programme of study that offers students the opportunity to explore a particular area of interest, writing both exams and a 25,000-word thesis. Please see this link for more details.
Oxford’s School of Archaeology provides outstanding opportunities for doctoral studies in archaeology. Students wishing to undertake substantial, independent research on a topic in Asian archaeology may study for a doctoral (DPhil) degree. Supervisors will be guided by those who have primary interests in Asian archaeology. Successful doctoral theses in Asian archaeology will display evidence of substantial and original research, lucid and scholarly presentation and a sound knowledge of the general field within which the thesis falls.
Funding is available for both UK and international students to undertake graduate studies at Oxford. Please visit the University of Oxford website to learn more (http://www.ox.ac.uk/). Individual Asian nations also offer scholarships and bursaries to study in the UK; local British Council offices can often offer advice and assistance. We are also seeking sponsorship for specific Centre-related scholarships in future years. Please contact a member of the Centre if you are interested in graduate studies with us.
