East meets West along the Maritime Silk Route

Silk Route

The purpose of the symposium is to examine the trading dynamics of the maritime silk route from the Hellenistic period in the West until the time just prior to the rise of the Mongol Empire in the East. The aim is to cross disciplinary boundaries and bring together scholars from fields of Classical, Byzantine, Indian and Asian maritime history and archaeology, in order to examine the longue duree of trade along the maritime silk route.

The symposium is jointly organised by the Institute of Egyptology, Waseda University and the Oxford Centre for Maritime Archaeology, University of Oxford
