The Practical Mariner Project team understand that knowing where land can't be seen at all is crucial knowledge for mariners - and consequently something that archaeologists have been very interested in.
The team (Dr Linda Hulin, Dr Karl Smith and Dr Max MacDonald) using ArchGIS and Python, have created scripts which enable them to work out routes across the Mediterranean which keep land in sight. Their dataset will add a wealth of new information to what was previously understood of as a simple visible/invisible binary.
The Practical Mariner Project explores the ancient sailing world in the Mediterranean from the perspective of mariners and their practical needs. The project is funded by Augmentum.
