The Meyerstein Lecture in Archaeology, 2026 – Professor Sturt Manning
(Distinguished Professor of Arts and Sciences in Classics, Cornell University) will give a talk titled:
“Identifying climate changes that matter in the past and future relevance”.
Concern with modern climate change has seen much attention focused on looking for past cases of climate change and often relatively sensational claims follow (usually for collapse, demise, etc.). But in line with Confucius (and many others), we really should turn the telescope around: ‘consider the past and you shall know the future’. Here is a real contemporary and future relevance for archaeology and climate science. What types of climate change in the past few thousand years actually are substantially relevant to, or determinative for, history? What warnings do these effective episodes provide for the present and future. While there is considerable complexity and noise, a few patterns appear clear and should be a focus for attention.
5pm, Thursday 14 May at St Cross College. To be followed by a reception.
