 Alexandria and the Sea

This symposium, hosted by the Oxford Centre for Maritime Archaeology, will examine the relationship of the city of Alexandria to the sea during the Ptolemaic and Roman periods. At the centre of these discussions will be a presentation of the results of the Institut Européen d’Archéologie Sous-Marine (IEASM) and its research associates on the Portus Magnus. IEASM has surveyed and excavated in the port since 1996, with the support of the Hilti Foundation, and is currently in the final stages of a new major publication of its work. The symposium will also bring together scholars working on the relationship between the great city of Alexandria and its connections with the maritime world via its Portus Magnus. Papers will examine the city, its maritime façade and  connections in Egypt and across the sea.

Attendance at the conference is free, but please register by contacting linda.hulin@arch.ox.ac.uk
