This introduction summarises critical issues relating to global heritage systems and the management of heritage in Africa. Specifically, it engages in a discussion of the Western, colonial bias of the World Heritage system and the failed inclusion of intangible cultural heritage as a response to critiques led by the Global South. The introduction also outlines how the chapters in this volume Part connect with these issues through examinations of national legislation and customary African law, sustainable development, heritage tourism, and language.
