Major research interests involve the hillforts of England, Wales and the Isle of Man, their location and social significance. Currently engaged in writing second edition of the book ‘Beacons in the landscape, the hillforts of England and Wales’, first published in 2009. Undertaking major project at Ravenburgh Castle hillfort, Hitchin, Hertfordshire, funded and supported by the Robert Kiln Trust, the CBA and Historic England. This involves detailed surveys of this ‘at risk’ site and completion of a monograph on the 1964-75 excavations of the late Dr James Dyer. Also engaged in research and surveys of hillforts in association with Shropshire Council and Denbighshire County Council. Formerly Chair of the Hillfort Study Group and team member of the award-winning ‘Atlas of Hillforts in Britain and Ireland’ project of Oxford, Edinburgh and Cork Universities. Member of Clwydian Range and Dee Valley Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty Heritage, Culture and Communities Working Group.
