Dr Bijan Rouhani
Research Interests
My research and professional interests include the management and conservation of built heritage; assessing and recording risk and damage from natural and human-induced disasters and armed conflict to archaeological sites and monuments in the Middle East and North Africa using satellite imagery and on-site condition assessment and developing risk preparedness and management plans and methodologies for endangered cultural heritage sites; post-war and post-disaster recovery and reconstruction of cultural heritage; and new technologies, including mobile applications, for data recording and emergency management for archaeological sites.
My PhD is in the History and Conservation of Architectural Heritage from the University of Rome, La Sapienza, Italy. Thesis: International Principles for the Protection of Cultural Heritage during Armed Conflicts. I have a Master’s degree in the Conservation and Restoration of Historic Monuments and Sites.
I am Vice-President of the Scientific Committee on Risk Preparedness of ICOMOS (ICOMOS-ICORP), and Vice-Chair of the ICOMOS Working Group for Safeguarding of Cultural Heritage in Syria and Iraq; representative of ICOMOS on the International Board of the Blue Shield; Director of AMAL in Heritage at Global Heritage Fund (GHF) – Cultural heritage emergency management tools and training for the MENA region; Project Specialist for Cultural Heritage Condition Assessment, Planning and Preservation at American Schools of Oriental Research (ASOR) Cultural Heritage Initiatives for Syria and Iraq; expert, author, and content developer of the distance learning course on Heritage and Risk Management, Athabasca University, Canada; and member of the Executive Board of the Society for Iranian Archaeology (SIA).
