Hattab II, Morocco

Hattab II Cave is situated in the upland Rif region of northwestern Morocco. Archaeological excavations in 2002–2003 revealed an undisturbed burial of a young adult male. The dentition revealed absence of the upper central incisors with complete remodelling of the surrounding bone, consistent with a pattern of cultural modification of the dentition widely reported during the Iberomaurusian. The burial was accompanied by two bone points, a marine gastropod, a gazelle horn core and a small bladelet core of Iberomaurusian type. Thermoluminescence dating of a burnt stone artifact in association with the burial provided an unexpectedly young age of 8900 ± 1100 bp, pointing towards a degree of cultural continuity across the Pleistocene/Holocene boundary within this region of Morocco.
