Staff at the School of Archaeology win one Main and four Small Fell Fund Awards

The School of Archaeology is delighted to announce that in the recent Trinity Term round of applications, five of our colleagues have been awarded a John Fell Fund.

Professor Christopher Ramsey, Head of School – “I would like to congratulate all of those who put in so much work to make these applications so competitive.  The range of the projects shows the breadth of talent across the School and we all look forward to seeing the projects underway.  It is also important to remember that the criteria for selection within the Fell fund is ideas with significant potential for further development: in the light of this the scale of this success here is very promising for the future.”

 

Prof. Mike Charles will receive a Main Award for his project titled: ‘Early farming systems in lowland Mesopotamia as a foundation for urban societies’

 

 

The following researchers will receive a Small Award:

 

Dr. Joel Alves -  ‘Using historical DNA to investigate the persecution and near extinction of polecats during the 19th century in Britain’

 

 

 

Dr. Tom Maltas - ‘Urbanisation and the political economy of farming in later prehistoric western Anatolia

 

 

 

 

Dr. Valasia Isaakidou -  ‘Baseline stable isotope values for browsing goats from Kythera, Greece’

 

 

 

 

Dr. Michael Fradley -  ‘Understanding heritage loss and landscape change in the Jordan Valley through legacy aerial photography’

 

 

 

The John Fell Fund is intended to foster creativity and a proactive approach to research opportunities in all subject areas, particularly interdisciplinary fields. It makes seedcorn and start-up grants and provides staff and funds to stimulate applications to external agencies. The Fund will not duplicate the purposes of external funding bodies.

The next deadline for applications to the John Fell Fund is noon on Wednesday 23 October 2024. All applications require departmental approval before they can be submitted to the division. The School review deadline for small award applications will be Wednesday 16th October. Laura Morley will circulate details on the review procedure for both small awards and main awards before the start of Michaelmas term 2024.
